Elyssa has already told me that I am *not* allowed to hand off our future children to various professional athletes.
Month: August 2013
I am keeping my fingers crossed that Disney surprises me and *does* announce something big related to Star Wars.
This is Time Warner Cable’s spin on that current CBS negotiations.[^fn1] I see no “good guys” in this fight. The networks realize they need to squeeze the cable companies because people are no longer willing to spend as much on ads, and the cable companies want to hold on to their dying business models. The whole thing is a mess.
[^fn1]: I am sure CBS has some “reasonable” explanation for its conduct.
Looks pretty solid. I am glad they appear to have kept in some of the humor that made the first Thor movie so fun.
This makes me excited for my stay at the French Quarter early next year.
Devir Kahan, writing at his *Bitquill* site about the issues [Feed Wrangler](http://feedwrangler.net) had yesterday:
> I didn’t really get worried at all that my feed reading service had just imploded, because I didn’t really think that it had. I didn’t get worried that my account was hacked or anything like that. I just knew that FeedWrangler is operated by a single person, David Smith, and was sure that, somewhere out there, said single person was dropping everything to run and do the best possible job to get FeedWrangler back up in the least amount of time possible. Indeed, the service came back within the hour.
> But I also knew, more importantly, that he was sure to be updating the FeedWrangler Twitter account with updates as to what was going on — with total, complete transparency at every step of the way. After all, especially with a one man shop, he has a real reputation to keep up. I popped open Tweetbot to check in on what the story was, saw that FeedWrangler was having some problems but should be fixed in a short time, and went on with my day. By the time I came back to Reeder later in the day, it was no longer giving me errors and things had returned to normal. The whole situation just felt so human.
I complete agree with Devir. I had absolutely no problem with what happened yesterday, and I hope David learns from the event and makes the service better. Unfortunately, [some people are not as understanding about what happened](https://alpha.app.net/maximevalette/post/8611137#8608791).
Heidi MacDonald, writing at *The Beat*:
> [B[asically, DC has been heavily promoting their September Villains Month event and the snazzy lenticular 3D covers—which look pretty snappy based on the ones we saw at San Diego. However, because the covers are plastic, they had to be printed way ahead of time—meaning that retailers had to order them way ahead of their normal ordering cycle, something that may not have been made entirely clear to them.
What a disaster. If I was a retailer, I would be furious. On the bright side, I anticipate that *I* will be exactly ZERO DC Comics during September.
Reading this made me feel happy.[^fn1]
[^fn1]: The two crazy wins the past two nights probably helped with that too.
A-Rod is going to drag his appeal out,[^fn1] but maybe we can be done with this rest of this Biogenesis garbage.
[^fn1]: I am actually fine with A-Rod fighting his suspension. I think it is a little ridiculous (plus, I want the Yankees to have to pay his ridiculous contract.
Victorino named AL Player of the Week
Well deserved. I have really enjoyed watching Victorino play this year. I just wish he could stay healthy.
Okay. I am officially nervous.
This.Just.Never.Ends.[^fn1]
[^fn1]: Okay, I admit, I do want to see if A-Rod gets banned immediately. Also, I want to see if MLB ends up bailing out the Yankees with respect to A-Rod’s salary.
I am not a major fan of the Boston Globe’s sports coverage[^fn1], but now I am going to be especially cautious. Will the new relationship give the Globe superior access to Red Sox players and news or will it simply make the paper into a mouthpiece for Red Sox ownership? I guess only time will tell.[^fn2]
[^fn1]: For Red Sox coverage, I highly recommend the [Providence Journa](http://blogs.providencejournal.com/sports/red-sox)
[^fn2]: In the meantime, how about taking down the stupid paywall, or, better yet, giving a special “Red Sox fan” subscription for people who only want to read the Red Sox related stuff.
Woah. I did *not* see this coming. To be honest, I am kind of excited. Since I only started watching Doctor Who with the reboot, I have never seen any of the “older” incarnations of the Doctor. It should be fun.
Over at *TouringPlans.com*, Len Testa has posted a list of all that has changed in the 2014 Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World. As you might expect, there is a ton. Here are some highlights:
* A new, detailed section on Disney’s new RFID-enabled MagicBand wristbands, used for admission media and payments, including how RFID technology works and the privacy implications of in-park location tracking.
* A new, detailed section on FastPass+, the update to Disney’s Fastpass ride reservation system, including what’s the same and what’s going to be different. How FastPass+ will affect your waits in line, and tips on which attractions will most benefit from FastPass+.
> …
* The latest on how Disney classifies room views at the Yacht Club and BoardWalk resorts.
> …
* Updated driving directions, including best exits, based on latest construction for I-10, I-75,and I-4.
> …
* A description of Fastpass loopholes found at the Magic Kingdom, including which attractions participate and how to take advantage of them.
Like I said, that’s just some of the ones I am more interested in. There are a ton more.
A Recap of Last Night’s Sox Comeback
This “not quite live” blog of last night’s big Red Sox comeback has been my favorite coverage of the game so far.[^fn1] My favorite part, however, might be the picture of the Johnny Gomes and Jenny Dell getting soaked during the post-game interview.[^fn2]
[^fn1]: Of course, Rob Braford’s [“Closing Time” column](http://fullcount.weei.com/sports/boston/baseball/red-sox/2013/08/01/closing-time-red-sox-mount-comeback-for-the-ages-score-six-in-ninth-to-top-mariners/) is also quite good.
[^fn2]: Here is (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jDMbqST9U4) from when occurred on television.
> Traditionally blue states such as New York, Massachusetts, and Connecticut don’t allow either early voting or no-excuse absentee voting, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Other states allowing neither include Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Missouri, Kentucky, Virginia, South Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi.
Stop using these *facts* to counter the narrative! That isn’t fair!
This whole fiasco is just dragging on, and on, and on….
In an interview with *Comic Book Resources*, Paul Dini[^fn1] gives his opinion on the latest iteration of Harley Quinn:
> I was very happy that Jimmy [Palmiotti] and Amanda [Conner] are taking her over because I like them as creators, I like them personally and I know they have a lot of affection for Harley. When I saw the new look on her, I was going, “That’s cute! That really works!” That’s not only of the moment, it’s also five minutes from now, because roller derby is really growing across the country. Our producer on the Hulk, Henry Gilroy, is actually the coach of a roller derby team. His girlfriend is a roller derby girl. I think it combines a lot of elements of cosplay and rough and tumble action and empowerment and everything. Harley is a natural fit in there. When I saw the look, I said, “I could see her doing that. That’s a lot of fun.”
Dini is a [little more positive than I was](https://johnkiv.us/2013/07/16/amanda-conner-jimmy-palmiotti-to-launch-a-new-harley-quinn-monthly/).
[^fn1]: I doubt I have to mention that Dini is credited with creating Ms. Quinn.
Of course, no matter what the rules are, Carolina will have to play Kansas in the second round.
