The iOS looks really slick. I have a feeling his servers are getting just crushed at the moment though.
Category: Internet
If I can use my iPad or my Kindle during takeoff, I will never buy a magazine again.
Umm, hello? Over here. Who has two thunbs and wants gigbit internet?
Easily the best [App.net](http://alpha.app.net) available for the Mac.
Daniel Jalkut told me about this tip years ago, and I use it quite frequently. I can imagine a lot of people who use MarsEdit, however, do not even know it is possible.
Michael has mixed results during his initial tests of Manton’s [new site-specific search](http://searchpath.io/). I like *Searchpath* conceptually, but I am not quite ready to [switch over from my Sphider](http://search.johnkiv.us) installation.[^fn1] That said, if I did not already have my [Sphider](http://www.sphider.eu) installation running, I would probably have used Searchpath for my site’s search functionality.
[^fn1]: If anything, I think Searchpath’s launch has motivated me to better integrate my search into the rest of my site.
J.D. Bentley:
> I’ve turned to reading non-technological sites and subjects, primarily cultural and religious. It’s much more interesting and edifying to take outside ideas and see how they relate to technology, rather than reading tech pundits and cybertheorists spout their pompous opinions.
> If you read one of them, you’ve read them all. Almost constantly, everyone in this sphere is saying the exact same thing, even if they disagree. They approach the topic from the same place. They are two sides to the same coin.
Writing like this is why I signed up for Mr. Bentley’s [The Handshake](http://ths.jdbentley.com/about/)[^fn1].
[^fn1]: Also, I completely agree with the substance of what he is saying.
iOS 6.1 is Out
Unsurprisingly, this “update contains improvements and bug fixes.”
Buy [this version](https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/baby-got-back-in-style-glee/id596893770)[^fn1] instead of the Glee rip-off. Also, you can read [Marco Arment’s](http://www.marco.org/2013/01/27/jonathan-coulton-explains-how-glee-ripped-off-his-cover-song) or [Laura Hudson’s](http://www.wired.com/underwire/2013/01/jonathan-coulton-glee-song/) summary of the whole story[^fn2].
[^fn1]: Yes, I know “original remake” sounds a little ridiculous.
[^fn2]: Short, short version: Glee producers fine good remakes of songs and then copy them note for note, show them on the the show, sell the mp3 versions, and give no credit or compensation to the original creators of the remake.
I still love these kind of “process” posts.
The recent end of two of my favorite podcasts[^fn4] opened up two slots in my “must listen” podcast rotation. After a few weeks listening toh various different shows, I selected three shows to fill the void:
* [Unprofessional](http://www.muleradio.net/unprofessional/) – Hosted by Lex Friedman and Dave Wiskus, this show features interviews with various [internet famous](http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=internet%20famous) people[^fn1]. The interviews are normally free flowing, and, most importantly, hilarious.
* [The Crossover](http://5by5.tv/crossover) – A new show from Dan Benjamin that features various hosts from other 5by5 shows. The topics so far have been wide ranging and the discussion has been extremely strong. This show is Dan at his best.
* [The Impromptu](http://theimpromptu.net) – A weekly roundtable of semi-rotating hosts that discusses technology news and culture. The hosts do an excellent job of turning a critical eye to companies, especially Apple, without falling into the “trolling” that can occur on similar shows.
These podcasts join my existing list of “must listen to” shows:[^fn2]
* [The B&B Podcast](http://5by5.tv/bb)
* [The BS Report](http://sports.espn.go.com/espnradio/podcast/archive?id=2864045)
* [CMD+SPACE](http://www.70decibels.com/cmdspace)
* [Debug](http://www.imore.com/category/debug)
* [iFanboy](http://ifanboy.com)
* [In Beta](http://5by5.tv/inbeta)
* [Old Tech News](http://5by5.tv/otn)
* [The Talk Show](http://www.muleradio.net/thetalkshow/)
* [The Tony Kornheiser Show](http://sports.espn.go.com/espnradio/podcast/archive?id=5543849)[^fn3]
* [The Two-Headed Nerd Comicast](http://twoheadednerd.com)
[^fn1]: I do not intend “internet famous” to be meant as an insult. I was only trying to describe the class of people that you normally see in “tech podcast”-type interviews.
[^fn2]: There are a lot of other podcasts that I listen to most, if not all, episodes of. The ones listed here, however, are the ones that I listen to *every* episode of.
[^fn3]: *NOTE*: I listen to the ESPN feed, that filters out most of the music and the “Old Guy Radio” segment, since it’s available about 30 minutes after the show ends. The “raw” ESPN 980 feed, that has the complete show, is on a 24 hours delay.
[^fn4]: [Build and Analyze](http://5by5.tv/buildanalyze) and [Hypercritical](http://5by5.tv/hypercritical)
Aereo, a company that allows its subscriber to stream local television to their mobile devices, is coming to Raleigh. You can [sign up at their website to be notified when the service goes active](https://aereo.com/preregister).
> But what really stands out, for me, is the atmosphere. So far, it’s probably what I like most of App.net. First of all there’s that different pace I was mentioning before. The feeling is of a quieter place than Twitter, and not only because it’s a much smaller place. People seem more relaxed, friendlier, more willing to engage in long conversations and more willing to include you if you join in a conversation long after it’s started. With Twitter, I think social network; with App.net, I think community. This is the core difference, in my opinion. Two main things drive people towards this behaviour, I believe: the paid membership model, intertwined with ‘the cause’. An App.net member may be a stranger to you, but you’re both on App.net because you both have decided to pay for a better online social experience and because — explicitly or not — you both agree to ‘the cause’, i.e. the set of core values on which the founders chose to build and develop App.net.
I agree completely.
The headline is a little misleading. The key line:
> “Over the coming weeks and months,” access will be expanded to everyone, regardless of language or location.
Good for Tumblr. Maybe this will help motivate me to give the service another try.
A [recent episode of the B&B Podcast](http://5by5.tv/bb/87) and the release of [Instacast 3](http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/stat?id=r*bqlTuiXSo&offerid=146261&type=3&subid=0&tmpid=1826&RD_PARM1=https%253A%252F%252Fitunes.apple.com%252Fus%252Fapp%252Finstacast-next-gen-podcast%252Fid577056377%253Fmt%253D8%2526uo%253D4%2526partnerId%253D30)[^f1624] made me think about the “memberships” that some sites offer. If you are looking to support people doing good work online and in various app stores, I suggest you become members of the following:
* [The Brooks Review](http://brooksreview.net) – The quality of Ben Brooks’ recent work has vaulted him to the top of the link-blog / tech blog / mac blog mountain. His pieces are getting more in-depth and more insightful. It is well worth the $4 a month to support his site and encourage him to continue doing such quality work.
* [Instacast](http://vemedio.com/products/instacast3/membership) – The recent update to Instacast has solidified its position as *the* podcasting app for iOS. Recently, the developer also announced that there would be a [Mac version](http://vemedio.com/support/instacast#faq3|17) of Instacast to complement the existing iOS versions. An iOS and Mac podcasting ecosystem, held together with [Instacast’s new Cloud Sync](http://vemedio.com/blog/posts/more-about-our-cloud-sync), sounds amazing. By becoming an Instacast member, you can help support the development of the app and the further improvement of the syncing engine.[^fn1]
[^f1624]: Affiliate Link
[^fn1]: One additional member benefit is that members got early access to the 3.0 version, and got the 3.0 version for free when it was released. I am not sure that will happen with the Mac version, but I have heard rumblings that it is the case.
I challenge you to top that.
Sweet. Now I can finally deposit some money with them[^f3901].
[^f3901]: I refused to pay Bank of America’s wire transfer fee to make a deposit previously.
Just in case you get the urge to post that ridiculous Facebook message about how “your copyright is attached” to your Facebook book posts.
Important tutorial from Michael Schechter in response to Brett Terpstra’s note that [nvAlt and Simplenote do not place nicely anymore](http://brettterpstra.com/a-warning-simplenote-nvalt-and-deleted-notes/).
