Aaron Murray’s signature drive leads Georgia to a 44-41 win over LSU

This was a great game. It was well officiated, well played and a blast to watch.1

  1. Also, as a Clemson fan, I enjoyed seeing Georgia win.

Pat Forde on the NCAA’s reduction of Penn State’s Penalties

But it's also significant news that the NCAA has rapidly amended its biggest ruling since giving SMU football the death penalty in the 1980s. Call it what you will, but I will call it this: tacit admission that what it did to Penn State was too much, too far outside the association's protocol and too damaging to a school that has rid itself of everyone associated with the Sandusky scandal.

This is Forde at his best: crushing the NCAA for its stupidity.

Pat Forde on Nick Saban’s response to the recent Allegations against Bama

Pat Forde , writing at Yahoo:

He took three questions, each of them about the Yahoo Sports reports that star offensive tackle D.J. Fluker allegedly accepted thousands of dollars during his Alabama career from a runner and former Crimson Tide player Luther Davis. Each answer became edgier and angrier, until the game's foremost control freak sensed he couldn't control this media interlude and stormed off five minutes into his post-practice press conference.

The fallout could be this, if the NCAA can find merit to the allegations: vacating of the 2012 national championship. And if potential problems arise from a second Yahoo Sports story indicating agent/runner interactions with safety Mark Barron during the 2011 season, it's conceivable that back-to-back could be gone-to-gone.

I am definitely not a fan of Saban, but I want someone to beat him. I do not want his downfall to be some lame NCAA scandal.

Clemson loses No. 2 WR to torn ACL

Clemson receiver Charone Peake, the second-leading receiver on the team, suffered a torn ACL during practice on Tuesday and will miss the rest of the season, the school announced on Wednesday.

This stinks, both for Charone and for the team.

ACC enjoys big wins to start season

> The league made a statement in Week 1 with Clemson beating Georgia, vaulting the Tigers to No. 4 in the rankings. Another win against a marquee team would send ACC officials dancing from press box tables. Especially a win from Miami — a program that has underwhelmed despite the expectation it would enhance the league’s reputation when it joined in 2004.

Miami got its win today.[^f3916]

[^f3916]: Even if it feels like Florida was highly over-ranked at 12.

Clemson is the Favorite in the ACC

From Heather Dinich’s write-up of ACC media day:

> For all of the talk about how the Clemson-Florida State game is going to determine this year’s championship game winner, the votes indicated the Tigers should head into it as the overwhelming favorite. Clemson received 95 votes as this year’s preseason favorite to win the ACC, while Florida State received just 15. You better believe the game will be much closer than that, but Clemson received 102 first-place votes in the Atlantic Division while FSU — the defending ACC champ — got 18. Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd also received 105 of 120 votes for the ACC’s preseason player of the year. The Tigers are shouldering the same kind of expectations FSU was last year.

The Tigers have pressure on them. Hopefully, Dabo has them ready to handle it.

College football’s most intriguing coaches

Dabo comes in at 20:

> He’s matured from excitable young boy to proven winner, with 21 victories the last two years and a validating Peach Bowl triumph over LSU. But with quarterback Tajh Boyd back and experience on both lines, the Clemson faithful would like a victory over hated rival South Carolina (he’s 0-4) and a run at a national title. There is no dress rehearsal with Georgia as the season opener.

That sounds about right.[^fn1]

[^fn1]: I am getting more nervous about the Georgia game by the day.

Heather Dinich’s Analysis of Clemson’s Schedule

> If Clemson wins the Big Three: vs. Georgia, vs. Florida State and at South Carolina, the Tigers should be a top-5 team looking at a chance to play in the last BCS national championship game.

That is a really big **If**.

Which college football championship contenders have the easiest, hardest schedules?

Great, Alabama has an *easy* schedule. Meanwhile, Clemson’s road has some difficulties as a result of being in the ACC:

> The difference between Clemson and the other contenders is that the Tigers, due to the low opinion of the ACC, cannot afford a single loss if they want to get into the BCS title game (barring some sort of 2007-level chaos, at which point all bets are off). Clemson’s schedule doesn’t feature many marquee games, but the three they have are tough: Georgia, Florida State and at South Carolina, all teams that could easily finish in the top ten. In addition to that, they would still have the ACC Championship Game against whoever survives the Miami/Virginia Tech/Georgia Tech/North Carolina royal rumble. This schedule isn’t as tough as some of the others, but considering Clemson’s margin for error (zero), it is a challenge.

This will all be moot, of course, if the Tigers cannot beat Georgia.

NCAA rules on Oregon: No bowl ban, scholarship reduction, show-cause penalty for Chip Kelly | Dr. Saturday – Yahoo! Sports

Christopher Wilson writing at *Yahoo*:

> The NCAA also has issued an eighteen-month show-cause penalty on former Oregon head coach Chip Kelly, the who is now with the Philadelphia Eagles. This means that it would be difficult for another college program to hire Kelly until after December, 26, 2014, which I’m sure is really bothersome to Kelly and his $32.5 million NFL contract.

It is almost like Kelly thought something might be coming.

Built for 2013: Clemson

Heather Dinich explains why the Tiger’s need to succeed this year:

> This is the last season for quarterback Tajh Boyd, whose decision to return to school instead of leaving early for the NFL draft can’t be understated. Offensive coordinator Chad Morris is a hot commodity these days when it comes to coaching searches. And should receiver Sammy Watkins decide to leave early for the NFL draft, the three stars on Clemson’s offense will no longer be aligned. This year, though, the Tigers have four starters returning on the offensive line to pave the way to another record-setting season.

This kind of pressure makes the first game against Georgia that much more important. I hope Dabo is getting the guys ready.
