Evaluating whether Jacoby Ellsbury is a Franchise Player

> If Ellsbury indeed a franchise player, the Red Sox might be able to land the frontline starting pitcher popular opinion has suggested they should seek for Ellsbury — maybe from the San Francisco Giants or the Washington Nationals.

> If Ellsbury is Ludwick or Quentin, however, there’s little reason for the Giants or Nationals (or any other team) to be willing to surrender anything of value for him.

It is going to be weird if / when Ellsbury gets traded. I hope that (1) he re-signs with the and (2) he returns to the almost-MVP form of a couple years ago.

Francona Might Have Started the Managerial Carousel

Terry Francona going to Cleveland seems to pave the way for Toronto to let John Farrell go to the Red Sox, followed by the Blue Jays signing Sandy Alomar as their new manager.

I am in the “fresh blood” camp, and think I would rather the Red Sox themselves took a run at Sandy Alomar. My top pick, however, is still Tampa Bay Rays bench coach Dave Martinez.

The Argument for Trading Jacoby Ellsbury

I am torn on this. On one hand, I understand how trading Ellsbury could potentially allow them to get some prospects, on the other hand, I feel like he could be a building block for the team going forward. I guess the whole thing will come down to how much Ellsbury wants in this next contract.

Getting John Farrell from the Blue Jays

I think I prefer the Red Sox hiring Tampa Bay Rays bench coach Dave Martinez for their next manager. Yes, Farrell might be more of a known commodity, but I think having someone who has seen first hand how Joe Maddon gets guys ready to play could end up being just what this young Red Sox team needs. Besides, if Martinez does not work out, the Red Sox can go after Farrell when he is no longer under contract with the Blue Jays[^fn1].

[^fn1]: That might be as early as next year, since it seems like Toronto is not particularly wild about him

Dan Levy on Bobby Valentine

> I don’t know why ESPN or MLB or even the great folks at Turner would want him. He presided over such a calamity in Boston it will be impossible for any fan to respect his opinion right now. That said, the guy isn’t shy about giving those opinions, so if he can do it in the protected environment of a TV booth with no pressure or accountability of actually having to win games, maybe that would be the best spot for him.

Bobby’s Valentine’s façade of “great baseball mind” took a major, major hit. I am sure he’ll still be entertaining on TV, but it will be harder to take him seriously as a baseball analyst going forward.

This Seems Appropriate After Last Night

The Red Sox 2012 Concession Speech:

> The first error in judgment actually goes back to last October. In hindsight, it seems that parting ways with the most successful manager in the history of the Boston Red Sox wasn’t the best idea. Is it true that he lost the locker room? Yes. Were there some possible issues away from the team? Yes. But Terry Francona was a proven winner. Maybe trading a player or two earlier would have brought the team back to him.

> …

> We made a mistake in bringing in someone who threw darts to create his lineups … allegedly. A man who would rather pick up his adult son at the airport rather than get ready for a game. A man who hadn’t managed in Major League Baseball in a decade. Boy, did it show. But he certainly still deserves to be the manager, because …. well, you’re going to have to talk to the owner for an explanation on that one. I got nothing.

> …

> The team was built in such a way that put a healthy amount of pressure on the top three. Josh Beckett, Jon Lester, and Clay Buchholz essentially needed flawless seasons. Daniel Bard and Felix Doubront were the true wild cards. Expectations were low for the two, considering they had never started the season in the rotation. Well, Beckett is now off the team, Lester is having his worst year, Buccholz has been inconsistent, Dubront ran out of gas, and Bard was simply ineffective. I think that sums it up quite well. Let’s move on.

This was painful to read.

Red Sox in the Top 10 Baby!

Top 10 pick in the draft that is:

> Their 90 losses is more than 23 other clubs, and also more than 21 other teams can now get to. The Mariners, at 73-86, have the tenth-worst record in the majors — while this should get them a top-10 pick, the Pirates have a compensation pick for their failure to sign Mark Appel that makes it so only the nine-worst records fit the bill. If the Mariners lost their last three contests, and everyone in front of them won out, they would still have only 89 losses. This would push Kansas City out of the top 10, but Boston’s placement is safe. Where they end up isn’t locked in yet, though.

Way to go boys. Way to go.

When will the Red Sox Sign Will Middlebrooks to a Long Term Deal?

> Indications are, however, that the Red Sox wouldn’t [sign Middlebrooks to an Evan Longoria level deal] this offseason with Middlebrooks, who is fewer than 300 plate appearances into his major-league career. As happy as Boston has been with the third baseman’s rookie season, it doesn’t necessarily represent a significant enough sample to make a longer-term commitment just yet. There have been plenty of promising rookies who have taken a step back in their development, and the Sox are in no rush to make a long-term judgment on Middlebrooks.

I hope Will Middlebrooks bounces back from his wrist injury. He was the highlight of the 2012 Red Sox season for me and I will be crushed if he cannot repeat his 2012 success next year.

A Sort-of-Positive Look at Ryan Lavarnway’s September

> With the expected bumps in BABIP and power, Lavarnway should be a good major-league hitter, especially compared to what he’s doing now. However, he still has work to do until the team can trust him to produce at that level on a consistent basis. … While Lavarnway’s numbers suggest a rebound is highly possible for next year, he still has to prove he’s capable of doing it on a full-time basis. For this reason, I would keep both catchers on the roster next year. If Lavarnway bounces back as is expected of him next year, Saltalamacchia could be trade bait at the deadline. Until then, though, it’ll be interesting to watch Lavarnway’s progress. His September that was supposed to be a showcase for him has been a failure, but there is still plenty of hope for him moving forward.

Obviously I would have preferred if Lavarnway hit as well as Will Middlebrooks did when he was called up, but at least *Over the Monster* gives me some hope for next season.

Middlebrooks has Cast Off But Not Ready to Play Yet

I still have fears that Will Middlebrooks will never be the same. I just hate wrist injuries for baseball players. Hopefully, early in 2013, Middlebrooks will show that I am overreacting.

The 2013 Baseball Schedule

I am still not sure how I feel about year-long interleague play. I would prefer it if they simply allowed the DH in all of baseball.

Ben Buchanan at *Over the Monster* [has some of the Red Sox specific notes](http://www.overthemonster.com/2012/9/12/3321876/boston-red-sox-2013-schedule):

> So long as the Sox can keep it close in the first five months, they’ll have their chance to win–or lose–the division in September as the year winds down to a crazy finish starting on September 5: four in New York, three in Tampa, three more against the Yankees, and then six against Baltimore and Toronto. Oddly enough, the year will end with a pair of two-game road series against Colorado (this is the first year of even leagues and year-long interleague play) and Baltimore.

I think the proverbial jury is still out on whether the Red Sox are going to add enough to contend for the division next year. If they are in contention though, the schedule lays out nicely for an exciting September.

How to Fail at Managing

Marc Normandin writing on *Over the Monster* about the excellent piece [R.J. Anderson wrote about failing managers](http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=18312):

> One point I’ve made in the past (more on the podcast than anywhere) is that it’s fine if Valentine isn’t the perfect strategist in today’s game — what matters the most is that he keeps the clubhouse together, like Francona used to. He hasn’t succeeded in doing that, though, at least in the iterations of the clubhouse that no longer exist

> …

> If Valentine had the clubhouse together a la Francona, but was Washington-esque with his dugout skills, would you be so willing to cut him loose?

I still cannot believe how much of a failure Bobby Valentine has turned out to be.
