The A.V. Club Reivews Grown Ups 2

Ignatiy Vishnevetsky starts the review with this paragraph:

> Grown Ups 2 opens with a CGI deer invading Adam Sandler’s bedroom, standing up on its hind legs, and pissing in his face; it ends with Sandler simultaneously farting, sneezing, and burping while having sex with Salma Hayek. In between, the audience is treated to Nick Swardson shitting in a Kmart and making out with a dog, David Spade sensuously licking a female bodybuilder’s bicep while wearing a John Oates costume, members of The Lonely Island rubbing their asses on the soapy windshield of Kevin James’ car while wearing cheerleading uniforms, and Shaquille O’Neal filling a swimming pool with his urine.

Sounds like a real winner.

The Verge Reviews Pacific Rim

> Ultimately, all Pacific Rim really needed to be was a clear-eyed, proficient example of high-concept thrill-ride storytelling, whether or not its “original” premise was particularly original. But del Toro accomplishes that task and then some, making one of the most satisfying movies of the summer — and one of the best of his career — by creating not just a new world, but one whose mythology actually deserves a universe.

I am hearing so much good buzz about this film. I think I might have even convinced Elyssa to go with me.

Pacific Rim Is Not Like Transformers, But Try Telling That To Twitter

Bleeding Cool on *Pacific Rim*:

> On the downside… see above, search Twitter, go bang your head against Facebook. It wouldn’t matter if people weren’t deciding to not see this film because they think it’s something that it isn’t. I’m disappointed that a lot of people who’ll love this movie won’t give it a chance because they don’t know what’s in the movie for them to love.

Two things:

1. I think is going to be a great movie.

2. I think the marketing for this movie is going to make it this summery’s *John Carter*.

New Pacific Rim Trailer

How do you make a great trailer?

1. You cast Idris Elba in your movie.

2. You base the trailer around him giving a speech that is capped off by him yelling “Today, we are cancelling the apocalypse!”

I am sold.

Disney Experiments with Renting Movies on Demand While Still in Theaters | Disney by Mark – Your Independent Disney News Source

> According to a Wall Street Journal story Disney and Sony Pictures have begun testing a controversial business model in South Korea: renting movies via video on demand (Super Premium VOD) while they are still playing in theaters. This is the first time major American studios have offered viewers anywhere the option of buying a ticket to see a movie, or to rent it at home from a cable, Internet or satellite-television provider.

> Sony’s Django Unchained was available to rent online and on cable just three weeks after premiering in Korean theaters last April. Disney’s animated Brave and Wreck-it Ralph came out four to five weeks after their release in theaters. In both cases the films were still playing throughout South Korea. Executives at other major Hollywood studios said they are watching Disney and Sony’s tests in Korea and may follow suit.

I would pay $30 to watch a new release movie at home on opening weekend. Being able to avoid a crowded theatre would be completely worth it to me.

An Argument for Likable Movies

Ann Hornaday writing for the Washington Post:

> But recently, I’ve begun to question whether “middlebrow” always deserves to be a pejorative. There are plenty of movies that, while not aspiring to high art or slumming their way to the lowest common denominator, qualify as middlebrow — and also happen to be skillfully made, generously humanistic and genuinely entertaining.

These are exactly the kind of movies I want to see.

Chris Pratt to be Starlord in the Guardians of the Galaxy Film

I know Chris Pratt can do humor. I have not, however, seen him in a serious role. I am cautiously optimistic that this is good casting[^fn1].
