“Justice League: War” is the first of DC’s New 52 Animated Movies

Ugh. It looks like they are moving the DC Animated Universe to the New 52 status quo.[^fn1] I guess that means we can say goodbye to the lush, vibrant universe that Bruce Timm developed. Sigh.

[^fn1]: The guys from [iFanboy](http://ifanboy.com) predicted that the [Flashpoint movie](http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/stat?id=r*bqlTuiXSo&offerid=146261&type=3&subid=0&tmpid=1826&RD_PARM1=https%253A%252F%252Fitunes.apple.com%252Fus%252Fmovie%252Fjustice-league-flashpoint%252Fid662821001%253Fuo%253D4%2526partnerId%253D30) (affiliate link) might do this, but I was hoping they were wrong.

Amanda Conner & Jimmy Palmiotti to Launch a New Harley Quinn Monthly

Some excerpts from their interview with *Comic Book Resources*:[^fn1]

> It was a little daunting, at first. She is a totally beloved character, and you have to show that some respect, all while bringing her into a whole new atmosphere. We have to make her world very believable. We want to make her almost like she’s someone you’ve met before.

It is too bad DC did not do that when they “revamped” Harley during the New 52 reboot.

> She is the hero in her own story. What happens, who gets killed, what house gets burned down and so on, well, thats just part of her story. She looks at the world differently and we will be building on that and looking even closer on her past and what makes her tick. There are so many layers to this fantastic character that we cannot wait to explore.

*That* I can agree with. Of course, up to this point, I do not think she has been written that way in the New 52.

> I am trying to incorporate my favorite things about her latest look and her early costume. I was also inspired by some roller derby girls that I met a short time ago. I think that look totally works for Harley. Another thing I try to keep in mind is what would work really well for costumers and cosplayers, and what would be fun for them to create.

I appreciate that Ms. Conner thinks about cosplayers when designing costumes, however, I wish this new costume mirrored Harley’s *old* costume much more than that [abomination she is currently wearing](http://d.kivus.net/yRZP).

> The “Suicide Squad” book has Harley spending time with other heroes and bad guys. This book will focus on Harley and her life, where she lives and how she functions, as well as her motivations and solo adventures.

Good. Because, the Suicide Squad stuff has been pretty terrible.

> In this series, we are moving Harley out of Gotham to a place that makes sense for her. Gotham will always be a part of her adventures, but we’ve got some madness up our sleeves. The art should give you a small hint.

Arethe words “Coney Island” right there in the image the hint that Mr. Palmiotti is talking about? That *might* be interesting, but it is weird to think that we will not get to see her bumping into people like Poison Ivy while running around Gotham.

Overall, I am really torn about this book. On one hand, I should be excited that my *favorite* comic book character is getting her own solo title. On the other hand, the New 52 Harley just is not the Harley Quinn that I know and love. I am willing to give Conner and Palmiotti a chance to try and right the ship, but I do not have confidence that DC Editorial will actually let them. I fear that [my Harley](http://d.kivus.net/PWYk) is not coming back.[^fn2]

[^fn1]: Important Note: Amanda Conner is *not* the artist on the book. She and Palmiotti are the co-writers and the artist is yet to be named.

[^fn2]: I would probably be fine with [this Harley](http://d.kivus.net/NEKp) too. Maybe DC could just make her the new Harley?

Geoff Johns Explains Trinity War

Personally, I am not very interested in Trinity War, but:

1. This was a really cool video

2. I am *slightly* more interested than I was before I watched it.

The Sausage Factory – Birds Of Prey Special

*Birds pf Prey* has been an absolute train wreck lately. I cannot believe they took an interesting character like Starling and just tossed her a side. This book went from one of my favorite DC books to being dropped from my pull list in 3 issues.

What Happened To Adam Hughes’ All Star Wonder Woman?

This was surprising to me. I thought for sure that Adam Hughes could pick his projects. It is unfathomable that DC Comics will not give him any work.

Brian Hibbs’ Breakdown of DC’s Villains Month

> First off, as is DC’s wont, lately, it is “Go big!”, and it isn’t a couple of books doing this stunt, it is essentially their entire publishing plan for the month. If you are a DC Universe reader, and if you’re not interested in antagonist-as-protagonist as a concept, you’re out of luck for this entire month. To a certain extent, it might be valid to call this “‘Don’t buy DC Universe comics this month!’ Month” for these customers.

I think I might be in this camp. I am strongly considering not buying any DC books in September.

Jeff Parker on Man of Steel

I cannot quote much of Mr. Parker’s review because it contains a lot of spoilers. Though I will quote the conclusion below, I encourage you to read the whole thing:

> Ultimately, Superman as a character runs the risk that everyone projects something different into their idea of him. I don’t need all my childhood buttons pushed, I don’t need the S-curl in his hair to be there, I just need the story to work on its own merits. The audience I saw it with seemed satisfied, though I think a few cheer-out-loud moments could have been created with a little more thinking.

Mark Waid on the Man of Steel

> The essential part of Superman that got lost in MAN OF STEEL, the fundamental break in trust between the movie and the audience, is that we don’t just want Superman to save us; we want him to protect us. He was okay at the former, but really, really lousy at the latter. Once he puts on that suit, everyone he bothers to help along the way is pretty much an afterthought, a fly ball he might as well shag since he’s flying past anyway, so what the hell. Where Christopher Reeve won me over with his portrayal was that his Superman clearly cared about everyone. Yes, this Superman cares in the abstract–he is willing to surrender to Zod to spare us–but the vibe I kept getting was that old Charles Schulz line: “I love mankind…it’s people I can’t stand.”

I enjoyed *Man of Steel*, but there was something about it that was missing. I think Waid nails what that missing component wis.

DC Comics Changes Digital Distribution Timing

DC Comics is changing the timing of its digital comics releases from 2pm to 3am Eastern. One of the major driving factors for this change is the inability to set specific release times in certain digital distribution channels[^f5541].

Ultimately, this is a positive step for comics readers. It allows readers to download their new Wednesday comics before their morning commute. I understand that some retailers might feel that this will “drive traffic away from comic stores,” but I suspect the people who are downloading their comics before they go to work had mostly already switched to digital. Still, it will be interesting to see how sales charts are affected in the coming months.

[^f5541]: They specifically list Amazon, Apple and Barnes & Noble.

DC Comics’ Facebook Poll Backfires

DC Comics posted a Facebook poll asking how people wanted to learn the character histories of its heroes in the “New 52 Universe.” The result were, unsurprisingly, hilarious. My favorite:

> Sell all your characters to Marvel and let them fix the problems
