Valentine Believes in Lester

> “I believe in him,” [Valentine] said. “I know nobody else in this room does, but I do. That’s a good start. Maybe if he’s sitting in here, it’ll be two of us by the time he leaves.”

I hope he’s right.

10 CSS Rules Every Designer Should Know

A good refresher for most web programmers. I’m a little embarrassed to admit that I did not know them all.

Another Weekend that Red Sox Nation Wants to Forget

I’ve avoided posting too much about this weekend for the Red Sox, mostly because it was brutal to watch. As always, the Providence Journal’s Red Sox blog has breakdowns of some of the major issues:

* [The Red Sox and Poor First Innings](http://blogs.providencejournal.com/sports/red-sox/2012/07/offense-put-in-early-hole—-again.html)

Has Gartner Ever Got Anything Right with Respect to Apple?

John Gruber asks a similar question to what I have been asking for quite some time now: “Why does the IT Industry Continue to Listen to Gartner?”

Mr. Gruber’s post links to [this article from Ed Bott that explains a number of Gartner’s mistakes](http://www.zdnet.com/why-does-the-it-industry-continue-to-listen-to-gartner-7000001394/).

Management Advice from Vince McMahon

This is, perhaps surprisingly, really good. My personal favorite is “don’t cultivate fear.”

> “Certainly the best way to fail in management [is to be distant and imperious]. You shut people down. If you have all the answers, why is anyone around you? If your ego is so big, then there’s no room for anyone else’s. The fear stuff—that is so rotten. You have to earn everyone’s respect.

Pat Forde Breaks Down the Upcoming Penn State Penalties

> To be sure, this is a situation that by itself has broken the college sports scandal mold. We’ve never had a story this sickening. We’ve never had an NCAA case involving a sexual predator and a school that simply shrugged at his horrifying behavior. We’re in new, stomach-turning territory.

I particularly like Pat Forde’s point that NCAA should not be involved in this at all:

> Fact is, I don’t trust Emmert or anyone else at the NCAA to deliver a punishment that fits the crimes of Jerry Sandusky and those who enabled him. As I’ve stated repeatedly, this is no place for the NCAA and its manual. This is for the criminal and civil courts to decide – and, if Penn State has the leadership and the courage, the school itself.

Macro Arment Expands on Talent Acquistions

The closing paragraph of Macro Arment’s [talent acquisition post](http://www.marco.org/2012/07/20/talent-acquisitions) yesterday was widely quoted:

> If you want to keep the software and services around that you enjoy, do what you can to make their businesses successful enough that it’s more attractive to keep running them than to be hired by a big tech company.

His follow-up piece today ends just as strong:

> It’s frustrating when a product or service you like goes out of business, and that’s effectively what happened here. Sparrow tried to succeed in an extremely difficult market, and apparently failed. Their customers supported their efforts up to this point, but there probably weren’t enough customers for them to refuse Google’s offer.

> Don’t blame Sparrow. Blame the terrible market for email clients.

As you can probably guess, the whole thing is worth a read.

Daniel Bard Update

> “Right now, he’s not consistent,” said Pawtucket Red Sox pitching coach Rich Sauveur of the 26-year-old right-hander who Boston tried to convert from a late-inning reliever to a starter. “But I’m seeing signs of what we’re looking for. He just needs to bring that from the bullpen to the mound and have that conviction on the first hitter he faces.

I really hope this whole starter experiment did not end the career of such a promising young pitcher.[^friend]

[^friend]: Full disclosure: One of my good friends went to school with Daniel Bard.
