Seth Davis picks Michigan to Win Tonight’s Title Game

I think I agree with his reasoning as to why Michigan will score against Louisville’s press:

> For evidence, all you have to do is think back on the Wolverines’ disembowelment of VCU in the Round of 32. Michigan committed just 12 turnovers against the Rams’ vaunted “havoc” defense, and they shot nearly 52 percent from the field because they got so many open layups at the rim. Everybody on the Wolverines’ roster can handle, pass and shoot. For all the speed on this team, the players are always under control. Indeed, it is remarkable that for a team that likes to get out and go, Michigan ranks first nationally in offensive turnover percentage. This is John Beilein’s culture: You take care of the ball, or you do not play.

I guess we will find out later tonight.

Dan Wetzel on the Phantom Jump Ball at the End of Louisville-Wichita State

> No one knows if Wichita State actually would’ve driven down the court and hit a dramatic game-tying three in the final second of its national semifinal game against Louisville.

> And that’s the problem.

> Instead, we know that referee Karl Hess believes that even the briefest of battles for a loose ball, even in the most precious moments of the sport, constitutes a held ball and thus a quick whistle and thus having the end of the game determined by that unlikable possession arrow.

When you’re an official and a national columnist is writing your name in a Final Four column, you really, really messed up. I would hope that, as a result of this call, Karl Hess is not officiating NCAA tournament games next year.

Michigan freshman Mitch McGary is as proficient on a unicycle as he is on the basketball floor

As a result of stories like this, McGary is one of the breakout stories of this year’s tournament. That said, I still do not think they will beat Syracuse.

Seth Davis breaks down how the other Final Four Teams can beat Louisville

I am particularly interested in the Syracuse v. Louisville matchup[^fn1]:

> **1. Take out Peyton Siva.** These teams played three times this season, with Louisville winning two of them (including the Big East tournament final by 17 points). The biggest factor in all of those meetings, for better and worse, was the play of Siva, Louisville’s 6-foot senior point guard. When Syracuse beat the Cards 70-68 on Jan. 19, Siva was awful, shooting 1-for-9 from the field (1-for-7 from three) and failing to attempt a single free throw. Even though Louisville won the second meeting on March 2 in the Carrier Dome, Siva was so bad (0-for-9) that Pitino parked him on the bench and admitted that Siva just couldn’t handle Syracuse’s zone. Siva was better in the Big East final, but he still shot 0-for-5 from three.

Easier said than done, of course.

[^fn1]: I think Syracuse is going to be able to get past Michigan.

Pac-12 head of officials investigated for targeting Arizona’s Sean Miller

> [Ed] Rush, [Pac-12 coordinator of basketball officials], according to a source within the Pac-12 officiating group, told a group of referees on the Thursday of the Pac-12 tournament in Las Vegas that he would give them $5,000 or a trip to Cancun if they either “rang him up” or “ran him,” meaning hit Miller with a technical or toss him out of the game. Rush then reiterated during a Friday morning meeting, according to one referee in attendance, that officials should take similar action against Miller if he did anything on Friday in the Pac-12 semifinals against UCLA.

This seems clearcut: Ed Rush must be fired. How can the Pac-12 keep this guy if there are even rumors of something like this?

Breaking Down the 2014 UNC Basketball Scenarios

1. I did not realize that people want McAdoo to go. I am not in that camp.

2. I think it is highly likely they all stay.

‘Big’ change coming for UNC next season?

Two takeaways:

1. Roy is going to change back to a more traditional, “bigger” line up.

2. Roy apparently refers to himself as “Ol’ Roy.”

NCAA Tournament First Round Schedule

For some reason, this schedule was really hard to find. Thankfully, the guys at *Rush the Court* put it all together.[^fn1] Some of the games I am looking forward to:

* **Bucknell v. Butler** – 12:40pm Thursday, TruTV.

* **Davidson v. Marquette** – Approximately 3:15p,[^fn2] Thursday, TruTV.

* **Oregon v. Oklahoma St.** – Approximately 4:30pm Thursday, TNT

* **Belmont v. Arizona** – 7:20pm Thursday, TNT.

* **Carolina v. Villanova** – 7:20pm Friday, TNT

[^fn1]: This is technically the “First and Second” round, but I refuse to call the play-in games the “first round.”

[^fn2]: In other words, after the Bucknell-Butler game ends.

Four-guard attack has North Carolina looking like a team you don’t want to draw

Jeff Eisenberg writing at *Yahoo*:

> What ailed North Carolina for the first three months of the season apparently wasn’t as complicated as it once seemed.

> The Tar Heels simply didn’t have their best players on the floor at the same time often enough.

I would argue that it was more that their *best* player, PJ Hairston, was not on the floor. Hairston has emerged as the team’s best scorer, as well as improving both his rebounding and his defense. People frequently point to Hairston’s shooting woes last year when the try to claim surprise in his development this year. I maintain that his shooting problems were a side effect of him not getting the playing time he deserved and the pressure he put on himself as a result. Now that Williams is giving him the chance to be a star, he is taking full advantage.

The Buckeyes Boost Their Postseason Resume By Beating The Spartans

The Big Ten seems to be, far and away, the best basketball conference this year. I have to assume that will translate into NCAA Tournament success. A part of me seems to think that is not always the case, however.
