An iOS 6 Feature that I Really Like

From Chad Williams:

> Any media that is acquired through iTunes now has its play position synced through iCloud. Start watching a movie on one device, pick it up later on another without having to sync with iTunes.

This is awesome. Also, I really need to buy an [AppleTV](http://www.apple.com/appletv/).

iOS 6 WiFi Issues

I got bit by this earlier. It was really strange. I had to jump onto my guest network and then back to my primary network in order to get WiFi to work on my upgraded devices. I am glad Apple has already got it figured out.

Retinizer

[Ben Brooks](http://brooksreview.net/2012/09/retinizer/):

> I just used it to force Word 2008 to show retina text in Word documents instead of pixelated crap — it worked. What a simple little app that works well (note [do] not to use it on Adobe apps)

Sounds like a winner.

Making the Argument Against NFC

Gabe Weatherhead over at *MacDrifter* makes the argument against *ever* having NFC in an iPhone:

> NFC is solving the wrong problem. Here’s the real problem: how do we communicate data a short distance as quick as possible with the least effort?

His solution?

> The human eye has already solved that problem. The camera has too.

> …

> With improvements in OCR, a camera could interpret text and images from an iPhone screen directly. Facial recognition could be used as identification without needing pin systems.

I think Mr. Weatherhead is on the right track. I like the idea of his system a lot more than anything that is currently available.

Ben Brooks Responds to MG Siegler

Ben Brooks, responding to [MG Siegler’s widely linked to article on Apple’s strategy of iteration](http://techcrunch.com/2012/09/13/the-iphone-5-event/):

> I think it’s important to remember that iterating to perfection is fantastic just so long as you recognize that perfection may be a completely different device than what you are iterating on today.

> …

> I just want to point out that there’s two types of iteration: iteration for the sake of perfection and iteration for the sake of selling new devices. It’s the latter that we need to be worried about, Apple’s still well in the iterating to perfection mode.

Mr. Brooks is one of the few people I have see who actually provided a counter opinion to what Mr. Siegler wrote. It will be interesting to see if the *next big thing*[^fn1] in the mobile space comes from Apple or some other company.

[^fn1]: I guess I can use the cool buzzword here: “disruption

The Unibody iPhone

This writeup from Don Lehman on the the various leaked parts of the alleged next iPhone is worth a read for the following note alone:

> A note before we get started: These images are of components of what is rumored to be the next iPhone, not of an official Apple-assembled iPhone. To that end, it’s almost like putting together a T-Rex skeleton. We can be pretty sure that T-Rex had tiny arms and a long tail, but I suppose it’s also possible we attached the tail incorrectly and really it’s a unicorn horn. Same thing applies here

Between all the rumors and this breakdown by Mr. Lehman, it seems inevitable that this new “longer” iPhone will be released next month.

The Verge Reviews iPad Keyboard Options

My fiancé has been looking into getting a keyboard for her iPad. I use the Apple Wireless Keyboard with an [Origami Case](http://store.apple.com/us/product/H6353ZM/A), but that can be a little bulky. Based on the options presented here, it looks she’ll end up choosing either the [Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover](http://www.theverge.com/2012/8/9/3229047/best-ipad-keyboard#section_5) or a [ZAGGfolio](http://www.theverge.com/2012/8/9/3229047/best-ipad-keyboard#section_5).

Apple Follows Amazon’s Lead and Disables Password Reset via Phone

Good move, though I think they should do it for longer than just 24 hours. [Amazon did it earlier today](http://www.theverge.com/2012/8/7/3226322/amazon-security-phone-account-changes).

80 Mountain Lion Tips from Mac|Life

Taught me how to turn off iCal stuff in Notification Center (which were annoying since I use BusyCal.) I just wish they had not presented it as a slideshow.

Bootable Mountain Lion USB Key

> UPDATE: Some users have reported getting a “Could not restore – Invalid argument” error at the end of the restore process. Our testing shows the error message can be safely be ignored; the drive can be mounted and will boot your system to install Mountain Lion. As noted in the comments, however, mounting the InstallESD.dmg file before performing the restore process avoids triggering the error message.

Knowing that would have saved me the last hour of my life.

Ben Brooks’ Response To Marco Arment’s Piece on the Mac App Store

Ben Brooks makes a great point that I had not considered:

> As for the worry of ‘low-traffic’, well Apple addressed that yesterday — ensuring that the Mac App Store will forever have high traffic: they made the Mac App Store the only place to get your OS updates for OS X, putting a notice in the Notification Center when you need to check for updates. Every Mac user will have to go into the Mac App Store from time to time, and I am certain many will click over to see what apps are featured. I can’t think of a better way to assure an app store of continued traffic.
