Instacast Memberships

I use [Instacast](http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/stat?id=r*bqlTuiXSo&offerid=146261&type=3&subid=0&tmpid=1826&RD_PARM1=httpThursday751751itunes.apple.com751us751app751instacast751id420368235751mt?8?o?4AMartnerId?30)[^aff] as my primary podcast client[^fn1], so it is a no brainer for me to sign up for one of these memberships.. My hope is that these memberships provide additional resources that allow the development of a [robust, new syncing platform](http://vemedio.com/blog/posts/333).

[^fn1]: I do [use multiple podcast clients](https://johnkiv.us/2012/07/20/making-the-best-of-the-current-ios-podcast-player-options/), but Instacast is by far my favorite

A Reminder: You Do Not Need to Close iPhone Apps

Some bad advice from the *Legal Productivity* blog:

> *2) Close Your Apps.*

> Apps will stay open unless you explicitly close them, even if you restart your phone. That means they’re running in the background, consuming computing resources even though you’re not aware they’re running. And “consuming computing resources” is engineering-speak for “using the battery”.

> To close unused apps, tap the home button twice, which will bring up a row of open apps across the bottom of your screen. Locate the app or apps you wish to close, then press on one of them for a couple of seconds until it starts to wiggle and shows a red ‘X’ in the upper-right hand corner. Hit the ‘X’ and the app is closed.

I still have no idea where this “advice” comes from. Even my father mentioned it to me the other day. As an effort to combat disinformation, I refer you to [John Gruber](http://daringfireball.net/2012/01/ios_multitasking):

> Bottom line: the iOS multitasking bar is not like the command tab switcher on Mac or Windows. It is not a list of currently “running” applications. It is simply a list of your most recently used applications, whether they’re running in the background, suspended in memory, or completely inactive. Notice, for example, that if you turn an iOS device off and on, completely restarting the device, the multitasking tray still shows the same apps. It’s like your browser history.

and, for the most succinct response, [Fraser Speirs](http://speirs.org/blog/2012/1/2/misconceptions-about-ios-multitasking.html):

> Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. There are caveats to this but anyone dispensing the advice above is clearly uninformed enough that they will certainly not be aware of these subtleties.

Got it? You **do not** have to manually close your apps in iOS. Unfortunately, it seems like this “advice” simply will not die.

OmniOutliner for iOS Update Mentions Syncing Via Omni Sync Server

I just upgraded [OmniOutliner for iOS](http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/stat?id=r*bqlTuiXSo&offerid=146261&type=3&subid=0&tmpid=1826&RD_PARM1=http%253A%252F%252Fitunes.apple.com%252Fus%252Fapp%252Fomnioutliner%252Fid430118869%253Fmt%253D8%2526uo%253D4%2526partnerId%253D30)[^fn1] and the [release notes](http://d.kivus.net/BvEA) mention the ability to use Omni Sync Server to download outlines. The [Mac Version](http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/stat?id=r*bqlTuiXSo&offerid=146261&type=3&subid=0&tmpid=1826&RD_PARM1=http%253A%252F%252Fitunes.apple.com%252Fus%252Fapp%252Fomnioutliner-pro%252Fid404647179%253Fmt%253D12%2526uo%253D4%2526partnerId%253D30) does not yet seem to be updated to support Omni Sync Server functionality, but I hope this iOS update is a sign that syncing will be coming to OmniOutliner soon.

The First App.Net Client in the App Store

The app probably will not blow people away, but there is some credit for being first.

The New Pac-12 Network App

The Pac-12 network [released a new iPad app](http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/pac-12-now/id550252401?mt=8) that looks really impressive. I am hoping that it will prove to be a good way to catch up on some of the USC and Oregon games that we do not get on the east coast[^fn1].

[^fn1]: You do need to log in with your cable account to get access to certain video streams. I am sure that will be problematic for some folks.

Drafts get a 2.0 Update

Last night, [Drafts for iPhone](http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/stat?id=r*bqlTuiXSo&offerid=146261&type=3&subid=0&tmpid=1826&RD_PARM1=http%253A%252F%252Fitunes.apple.com%252Fus%252Fapp%252Fdrafts%252Fid502385074%253Fmt%253D8%2526uo%253D4%2526partnerId%253D30)[^aff] got an update to 2.0. It has a [bunch of new features](http://agiletortoise.com/blog/2012/8/20/drafts-20-and-drafts-for-ipad-10.html), including the ability to capture “links” to things like phone numbers and the ability to append to Dropbox files. That, however, was not the only Drafts related news. [Drafts for iPad](http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/stat?id=r*bqlTuiXSo&offerid=146261&type=3&subid=0&tmpid=1826&RD_PARM1=http%253A%252F%252Fitunes.apple.com%252Fus%252Fapp%252Fdrafts-for-ipad%252Fid542797283%253Fmt%253D8%2526uo%253D4%2526partnerId%253D30) was also released and there is [Simperium-based](http://simperium.com/) sync between the two versions[^note]. I am just starting to use the new features, but there have already been write-ups from [Gabe Weatherhead at MacDrifter](http://www.macdrifter.com/2012/08/drafts-app-update.html), [David Sparks at MacSparky](http://macsparky.com/2012/8/drafts-for-iphone-and-ipad), and [iMore](http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/TheIphoneBlog/~3/4MmtqsQwuQw/story01.htm).

[^aff]: Affiliate Link (as are all links to the Drafts apps in this post.)

[^note]: I have only used the sync for a short time, but, so far, I have been impressed. If this is what we can expect from Simperium-based syncing, then I think a number of iOS developers might look into moving to that. I hope [Instacast](https://johnkiv.us/2012/08/06/the-state-of-instacast-syncing/) is next.

Fantastical Adds iOS and OS X Reminders

As reported on [Macstories](http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/macstories/ad-supported/~3/CxolQUorZGU/), Fantastical now supports adding iOS and OS X reminders via its same “plain language” interface. Though I’m not sure how much I’ll use this feature, I will say that I use Fantastical way more than I ever thought I would. It has completely replaced Google Calendar as the default way I enter new events.
